and cavities for as long as the sealant is intact. Research has even
shown that damaged or partly removed sealants still protect the tooth,
albeit not as well as when the sealant is whole.
Non Toxic
In contrary to popular belief about tooth sealant and BPA, sealants
are non toxic and provide the best protection for children’s’
teeth available. The treatment has been recommended by dentists for
over twenty years now, and more and more parents decide to have their
children teeth treated. There are even school programs for kids to
have sealants applied in school. After tests carried out in Europe
it became clear that only one out of twelve brands of dental sealant
leaked a trace of BPA, after which the manufacturer was contacted
and the composition of the sealant was adjusted. All dental sealants
used by dentists nowadays have been tested and approved.
Why are Dental Sealants Better Than Filling Cavities?
Dental sealants prevent teeth from being attacked by bacteria and
plaque. If bacteria settle on the sealant they will not be able to
break through the plastic shield and enter the tooth. Cavities in
teeth will be avoided and the process does not damage the tooth in
any way. Drilling and filling cavities is a stressful procedure for
children and can potentially cause damage to the underlying tooth
pulp. Alls this can be avoided by applying sealants to the teeth.
If damage has occurred already or teeth have deep natural cavities,
pit and fissure sealants can fill the cavities and prevent bacteria
from entering them.
Cost of Dental Sealants
Having tooth sealants fixed will cost from $25 up to approximately
$45 per tooth. If having sealants applied is not covered by your insurance
there will be additional examination fees and extra costs for x-rays
(possibly necessary to check the teeth for cavities and signs of damage).
There is no difference in cost for no etch dental sealants or pit
and fissure sealants procedures where use is made of chemicals. Now
that most dental insurances cover this procedure and tooth sealant
and BPA questions are no longer necessary, there is every reason to
prevent children from experiencing tooth decay.
